New interpretation of AN3.76 including sati, dhātu, bhava and kamma.

AN 3.76 PTS: A i 223 Thai 3.77 Bhava Sutta: Becoming (1)

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an03/an03.076.than.html

“Kāmadhātuvepakkañca, ānanda, kammaṃ nābhavissa, api nu kho kāmabhavo paññāyethā”ti? “No hetaṃ, bhante”. “Iti kho, ānanda, kammaṃ khettaṃ, viññāṇaṃ bījaṃ, taṇhā sneho. Avijjānīvaraṇānaṃ sattānaṃ taṇhāsaṃyojanānaṃ hīnāya dhātuyā viññāṇaṃ patiṭṭhitaṃ evaṃ āyatiṃ punabbhavābhinibbatti hoti.

“Ananda, if there were no kamma ripening in the sensuality-property, would sensuality-becoming be discerned?” “No, lord.” “Thus kamma is the field, consciousness the seed, and craving the moisture. The consciousness of living beings hindered by ignorance & fettered by craving is established in/tuned to a lower property. Thus there is the production of renewed becoming in the future.

Let's summarize the sutta above. loka = kāmadhātu + rūpadhātu + arūpadhātu (world = desire realm + form realm + formless realm). bhava = kāmabhava + rūpabhava + arūpabhava (existence = desire existence + form existence + formless existence). The two images of thought-system and eye-thought re-drawed as follows while reflecting these contents of the sutta above.

According to the picture above, which reflects the contents of the sutta, whichever kamma in this life or previous which were already ripened as bhava play the role of the field for vinnana, then there is no way to escape. But there are three possibilities to get out of kamma.

1. The 1st potential to overcome the kamma problem by citta.

Aṅguttara Nikāya The Book of the Threes 100. The Salt Crystal

https://suttacentral.net/en/an3.100

“Now suppose that a man were to drop a salt crystal into the River Ganges. What do you think? Would the water in the River Ganges become salty because of the salt crystal, and unfit to drink?” “No, lord. Why is that? There being a great mass of water in the River Ganges, it would not become salty because of the salt crystal or unfit to drink.”

According to the sutta above, if any one could made their current citta as lokuttanra citta of the size of the Ganges river through vimutti(experiencing nibbana), kamma's vipāka(result) become small enough to ignore them in present life and totally nothing in next life.

2. The 2nd potential to overcome the kamma problem by mano.

Unnabho Brahmano Sutta: The Brahman Unnabha

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn48/sn48.042.wlsh.html

"There are, Brahman, these five sense-faculties... which do not share in each other's sphere of action. Mind(Mano) is their resort, and it is mind that profits from their combined activity." "But, good Gotama, what is mind's resort?" "Mind's resort, Brahman, is mindfulness." "Then, good Gotama, what is the resort of mindfulness?" "The resort of mindfulness, Brahman, is liberation." "Then, good Gotama, what is the resort of liberation?" "The resort of liberation is Nibbaana." "Then, good Gotama, what is the resort of Nibbaana?" "That question goes too far Brahman. No answer can encompass it."

Although sati is just only one of the 52 cetasika in Abhidhammattha Sangaha, the special thing about sati is that it is related to mano. What makes this sati not easy to use? As mentioned in the sutta above, the vimutti(experiencing nibbana) must be premised on being able to use sati. If a person is proficient in sati, he can freely control the six inputs and six outputs of the mano, so he can escape from kamma. (It is reckless to challenge the utilization of sati without understanding the relationship between vimutti and sati.)

3. The 3rd potential to overcome the kamma problem by vinnana.

Majjhima Nikāya 140 The Exposition of the Elements

https://suttacentral.net/en/mn140

Athāparaṃ viññāṇaṃyeva avasissati parisuddhaṃ pariyodātaṃ.

“Then there remains only consciousness, purified and bright.

The starting point for the twelve programming tasks ie paṭiccasamuppāda(nbbna's idiosinchracy of building paccaya) is avijja. Therefore, if you break avijja through the penetration of four systematizing tasks ie four noble truth, then there will be the vinnana, purified and bright apart from kamma.

words in ending.

All three possibilities above are premised on vimutti(experiencing nibbana). For this reason, Buddha's teachings always begin and end with 4 noble truth, paṭiccasamuppāda and 8 fold noble path which lead to vimutti.(fin)
